ABUSE HURTS

Our Story

A source of courage, a catalyst for hope, a leader of movement & change. The Canadian Centre for Abuse Awareness (Abuse Hurts) is a charitable organization that transforms the lives of victims of abuse. We’ve selected a hummingbird to represent us because it is resilient, brave and joyful. We hope to reignite these qualities in individuals and families who are overcome with hopelessness, fear and despair in order to make them strong again.

Who We Help

For over 20 years, we’ve been working in collaboration with the community and corporate partners to raise awareness about the true cost of neglect and abuse. We support approximately 100 service agencies and other organizations across Canada. Our aid helps over 100,000 individuals per year. Through our referrals, we offer a full array of program services to address the needs of both child and adult victims of abuse. Our programs give hope and support to people who need assistance finding a new path.

Our Programs

Delivering Hope

Provides support to victims transitioning from a shelter through product distribution. We provide furniture, housewares, clothing, bedding, and essentials needed to start over. For abused women, to help rebuild their self-esteem, we offer a special day of pampering with a personal makeover and new outfits.

Support for Men

We hold conferences for men to support male victims of abuse. We continue to work to raise awareness regarding this unique program which has a long waiting list as a growing number of men find the strength to come forward.

Public Safety Advocacy

Abuse Hurts completed a groundbreaking report titled “Martin’s Hope”, named in memory of Martin Kruze. Martin was the first victim to go public about the Maple Leaf Gardens child sexual abuse scandal. Many of the recommendations from this report have been implemented, including raising age of consent from 14 to 16. We continue to advocate for legislation to prevent future victimization.

Huggum’s Hope Memorial

Full term babies that suffer death by abandonment are given dignity with a burial service where they are named, and their name goes on a monument. We are working on legislation to prevent future abandonment.

First Nations Assistance

We are committed to raising awareness about the abuse in residential schools. Ongoing support is provided to all First Nations survivors through resources and product distribution.

DreamBuilds

We provide assistance with renovations to agencies such as shelters.

Human Trafficking

Police services bring us victims who have escaped from human trafficking. Life essentials and support are given to these women.

Awareness

We are constantly providing ongoing awareness around the issues of abuse, using our voice to speak for all victims.

We are very proud to offer maximum support to abuse victims by keeping our administrative costs consistently under 12%
